The step from 15 to 16 is the one that changes how a car feels most noticeably. Steering response improves because there is less sidewall to deform before the tyre bites, and the car feels more settled at motorway speed. What you give up is a little compliance over sharp-edged bumps — patched tarmac and expansion joints come through more clearly.

Weight is worth asking about at this size, because 16-inch rims vary a lot. A heavy cast design adds unsprung mass at each corner, which hurts ride quality and, on a smaller engine, acceleration.
